Dr. Leslie Kemp Poole will present a lecture titled The Three Marjorie(y)s and How They Changed Florida. The talk focuses on how Florida’s women have been important activists in protecting and preserving the state’s unique natural features, and on three women whose impact has been enormous.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings taught the world about the beauty of the state’s rural areas. Environmental activist Marjorie Harris Carr led the grassroots effort to stop the Cross Florida Barge Canal in the 1960s, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas was an accomplished author who took up protecting the Everglades in the last decades of her life. These three remain models of activism and are the focus of Poole’s talk.
Poole is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Rollins College and an award-winning writer and historian. The event is free.
