- Presented by: Zhisheng Shuai
The colloquium series offers a diverse platform for research scholars, faculty, students and industry experts to share and exchange ideas across mathematics, statistics and data science. This week Professor Libin Rong from the University of Florida will present on multiscale models of viral infection and treatment.
The presentation will discuss how mathematical models that connect drug action, intracellular viral replication, within‑host dynamics and transmission between hosts can reveal mechanisms that single‑scale models miss. Examples will include HIV, hepatitis C virus and SARS‑CoV‑2, illustrating links between pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, treatment resistance, therapy kinetics and population‑level spread.
Professor Rong is professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics and a courtesy affiliate professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Florida. He earned a B.S. in mathematics and an M.S. in applied mathematics from Fudan University and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Purdue University. His research focuses on mathematical and computational modeling of viral infections, drug resistance, immune responses and multiscale processes, using analysis, computation and experimental or clinical data.
