Dr. Mary L. Gray will present a talk for the Center for Ethics via Zoom on the paradox of automation’s last mile. She will discuss how current AI systems model social life by aggregating individual actions and digital traces, while overlooking the intelligence that emerges through trust, interpretation, disagreement, care, shared memory and collective judgment. The presentation will examine the consequences of treating these relational dynamics as mere data inputs rather than sources of expertise and authority, and will argue for technologies that learn with people and communities.
Gray’s background includes advising Microsoft on AI ethics and the nature of work in an AI‑enabled world. She is principal investigator of Project Resolve and founder of The Resolve Institute, an independent research organization focused on community‑driven AI innovation. Her prior experience includes more than a decade as a senior principal researcher at Microsoft Research, and she holds affiliations as a visiting research affiliate at MIT, a faculty associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, and a faculty position in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at Indiana University, with connections to anthropology and gender studies.
